Oconto County School Supply Drive Inc

The Oconto County School Supply Drive Inc., now in its fifth year, stands as a shining example of the dedication and generosity of local community members who work tirelessly to ensure every child starts the school year equipped for success. This grassroots initiative has grown into a cornerstone of support for families throughout the county.

“When I was young, my mom brought me to an event where I received free school supplies, and it left a lasting positive memory,” shared Brittney Dequaine, organizer of the Oconto County School Supply Drive. “That experience inspired me to bring this idea to life in Oconto County, and it’s been incredible to see how the community has embraced this mission.”

Since its founding in 2020, the drive has distributed thousands of backpacks filled with essential supplies to students in need. The program’s reach and impact have expanded each year thanks to the strong support of local businesses, sponsors, and volunteers. In its first year, 120 backpacks were distributed. By 2023, that number had soared to over 1,475. This year, organizers anticipate breaking records again as they continue to meet the growing needs of students across the county.

“The success of this program is a testament to the incredible people in our community,” said Samantha Routheau, President of the Oconto Area Chamber of Commerce. “It’s about neighbors helping neighbors and ensuring every child has the tools they need to learn, grow, and succeed. These efforts embody the heart of Oconto County.”

The drive relies on a variety of fundraisers and events to sustain its mission, including the popular Easter torte sales, the annual Stuff the Bus campaign in June, and events at Thompson’s Brat Barn. At the recent HarvestFest on Main Street, families enjoyed games, bucket raffles, and the opportunity to support a cause that directly benefits local students.

“Our community members, sponsors, and volunteers are the backbone of this program,” said Dequaine. “Each donation, fundraiser, and backpack filled represents a collective commitment to our children’s future. Together, we’re making a lasting difference.”

As the drive enters its fifth year, it continues to expand its reach, welcoming students from across Oconto County and beyond. The iconic yellow school bus donation boxes will return to local businesses this summer, offering an easy way for the community to contribute. Monetary and supply donations can also be dropped off or mailed to American Family Insurance Kevin Hugget Agency Inc., 215 Main Street, Oconto, WI 54153.

Shake A Burger Celebrates 10-Year Anniversary in Oconto

Shake A Burger Celebrates 10-Year Anniversary in Oconto

Oconto, WI – July 1, 2024 – Shake A Burger is thrilled to announce the celebration of its 10-year anniversary on July 1, 2024. This milestone marks a decade since Sarah DeDamos purchased the beloved local eatery from Harold and Beverly Beck, who not only sold the business but also provided Sarah with her very first job at the Marinette Dairy Queen when she was just 16 years old. This serendipitous beginning set the stage for a successful career in the food industry.

Reflecting on the journey, Sarah shared, “I didn’t know then that my first job would lead me to the success of my career. This adventure has been incredibly rewarding, and I have learned that it isn’t a job I can do on my own.”

Key to this success has been the support of her fiancé, Lance Olson, who helped come up with the name Shake A Burger. Her oldest daughter, Adiah, started working at the restaurant while still in middle school, and her son, Liam, is eagerly waiting for his turn. The youngest, Ella, enjoys all the ice cream, adding a sweet touch to the family’s involvement. “They are my rocks and motivation to be the best person I can be,” Sarah expressed.

Shake A Burger’s success is also attributed to the hard work and dedication of its staff. “Thank you, team, for showing up, your eagerness to learn, and your ability to make a difference in a locally owned small business. It has been my enjoyment to watch you grow and continue to stop in. Thank you,” Sarah added.

In the course of its journey, Shake A Burger attempted to open a second location in Peshtigo but decided to focus efforts on the Oconto location and Lance Olson’s business, Mariner Theatre. For the past two years, the restaurant has closed during the winter months, allowing time for “make and take” events at the Mariner, offering a fun way to connect with the community during the off-season.

Sarah expressed her gratitude for the community’s unwavering support, stating, “Lance and I are so blessed to have such great community support in our small businesses.”

Shake A Burger will celebrate its ten-year anniversary towards the end of August with music, prizes, and great deals on their delicious treats. Details of the event will be announced soon. “Thank you for TEN amazing years!” Sarah concluded.

Samantha Routheau, President of the Oconto Area Chamber of Commerce, remarked, “Shake A Burger has been an integral part of our community for the past decade. Sarah’s dedication and passion for her business have made it a beloved spot for locals and visitors alike. We are excited to celebrate this milestone with her and her team.”
