Blackbird Boutique Takes Flight in Oconto

A new shopping experience is spreading its wings in downtown Oconto, 1102 Main Street, as Blackbird Boutique is officially opening its doors on March 14, 2025! Owned by Amanda Derry, this charming boutique is more than just a place to shop—it’s a labor of love, community, and giving back.

A Dream Turned Reality

Amanda’s journey to boutique ownership began nearly a decade ago when Lisa, the former boutique owner, opened the shop. “When Lisa told me she was opening this store, I instantly told her to let me know if she ever needed help. I loved every moment of it—the people, the products, the conversations. It was never a ‘job’ to me, and it became a dream to one day own my own,” Amanda shares. “I just never thought it would be so soon!”

That dream has now come to life as Blackbird Boutique, a name rich in personal meaning. “My mom passed away from cancer on Mother’s Day in 2012. She loved sitting outside watching the birds, especially the crows, which she called ‘her boys.’ Since she can’t physically be here to support me, she’s here in my name and my product. My logo also features four birds, representing my four children, who have always been my biggest supporters.”

Unique Finds With a Purpose

Blackbird Boutique offers a thoughtfully curated mix of modern clothing, accessories, and unique gift items, many of which support charitable causes. “I’m keeping some of Lisa’s original styles while adding new items, including fun socks that support nonprofits like St. Jude’s, clean water initiatives, and children’s literacy programs,” Amanda explains. “Some of the coffee mugs also support cancer research, which is something close to my heart.”

Amanda is also committed to listening to her customers. “My daughter is quick to tell me what’s in style and what’s not,” she laughs. “I’ll also be taking customer feedback on new items they’d like to see in the store.”

A Boutique With Heart

The boutique’s mission extends beyond fashion—it’s about creating a joyful and welcoming space. “When I see people happy or excited, I get happy and excited for them, no matter how big or small the reason,” Amanda says.

Her long-term vision includes online ordering and curated gift baskets for special occasions. “I want to offer different pricing options for unique gifts, so there’s something for everyone.”

Chamber Support & Community Excitement

The Oconto Area Chamber of Commerce is thrilled to welcome Blackbird Boutique to the local business community. Chamber President Samantha Routheau shared her enthusiasm:

“Oconto is lucky to have passionate entrepreneurs like Amanda, who bring fresh energy to our downtown. Blackbird Boutique isn’t just another store—it’s a reflection of her heart, her journey, and her desire to give back. We encourage everyone to stop by and experience it for themselves!”

The OC Oconto Brings Unique Flair to Oconto’s Bar Scene

A new neighborhood bar is open in the City of Oconto, bringing a fresh approach to community engagement, atmosphere, and hospitality. The OC Oconto, located in a newly renovated space at 126 Huron Ave, will soon welcome customers with a unique blend of tradition, modern design, and a commitment to giving back.

Lifelong entrepreneur and bar owner, Rik Richards, brings years of experience in the hospitality industry, having successfully opened and operated bars across the country. When asked what inspired the launch of The OC Oconto, the owner shared, “This particular location was a solid investment because of the attached residence and a long-term tenant. It was an opportunity to create something special while also making a lasting impact in the community.”

The name The OC Oconto is a playful nod to the town itself, embracing local pride and establishing a welcoming, familiar feel for patrons. But it’s not just the name that will make this establishment stand out—its unique features and dedication to the community will set it apart from other local bars.

“Each month, I will donate a portion of our profits to a non-profit in our community,” the owner explained. “We also want to create an interactive and friendly environment, so every customer gets a complimentary koozie with their first beer—either slim can or regular size. Our bar top is even a dry-erase surface, where bartenders will write their names along with customers’ names, making it easier for people to connect and get to know each other.”

The bar’s interior has been thoughtfully designed with character and craftsmanship. Reclaimed barnwood from across Wisconsin has been used to restore the bartop and walls, sourced from the owner’s 11-acre reclaimed wood yard—the largest in the Midwest. This rustic, welcoming aesthetic will be complemented by a selection of TVs, plenty of tables for gathering, and the only blackjack game in the area.

When it comes to drinks and dining, The OC Oconto will serve a simple yet satisfying menu. Initially, Peps DraftHaus pizza and fresh popcorn will be available, with plans to introduce a hoodless, ventless fryer system in the future. The bar will feature a mix of popular beverages, including its signature drink, “The OC”, a refreshing Orange Crush cocktail made with Dekuyper Triple Sec, orange-flavored vodka, freshly pressed orange juice, and Sprite, garnished with an orange—all for just $4 every day.

The owner envisions The OC Oconto as a casual, friendly neighborhood spot where locals can gather, unwind, and enjoy great company. “We want to be a place where everyone knows your name. Prices will be economical, and the atmosphere will ultimately be shaped by our guests.”

As for entertainment and special events, details are still being finalized. However, the owner plans to collaborate with neighboring businesses like The Yard and is considering themed nights, happy hours, and other community-focused gatherings in the future.

Stay tuned for more updates and be sure to stop by The OC Oconto to experience this one-of-a-kind addition to Oconto’s social scene!

Oconto County School Supply Drive Inc

The Oconto County School Supply Drive Inc., now in its fifth year, stands as a shining example of the dedication and generosity of local community members who work tirelessly to ensure every child starts the school year equipped for success. This grassroots initiative has grown into a cornerstone of support for families throughout the county.

“When I was young, my mom brought me to an event where I received free school supplies, and it left a lasting positive memory,” shared Brittney Dequaine, organizer of the Oconto County School Supply Drive. “That experience inspired me to bring this idea to life in Oconto County, and it’s been incredible to see how the community has embraced this mission.”

Since its founding in 2020, the drive has distributed thousands of backpacks filled with essential supplies to students in need. The program’s reach and impact have expanded each year thanks to the strong support of local businesses, sponsors, and volunteers. In its first year, 120 backpacks were distributed. By 2023, that number had soared to over 1,475. This year, organizers anticipate breaking records again as they continue to meet the growing needs of students across the county.

“The success of this program is a testament to the incredible people in our community,” said Samantha Routheau, President of the Oconto Area Chamber of Commerce. “It’s about neighbors helping neighbors and ensuring every child has the tools they need to learn, grow, and succeed. These efforts embody the heart of Oconto County.”

The drive relies on a variety of fundraisers and events to sustain its mission, including the popular Easter torte sales, the annual Stuff the Bus campaign in June, and events at Thompson’s Brat Barn. At the recent HarvestFest on Main Street, families enjoyed games, bucket raffles, and the opportunity to support a cause that directly benefits local students.

“Our community members, sponsors, and volunteers are the backbone of this program,” said Dequaine. “Each donation, fundraiser, and backpack filled represents a collective commitment to our children’s future. Together, we’re making a lasting difference.”

As the drive enters its fifth year, it continues to expand its reach, welcoming students from across Oconto County and beyond. The iconic yellow school bus donation boxes will return to local businesses this summer, offering an easy way for the community to contribute. Monetary and supply donations can also be dropped off or mailed to American Family Insurance Kevin Hugget Agency Inc., 215 Main Street, Oconto, WI 54153.
